01What the Packager does in your cleaning route
Think of the Packager as a nearby unloading point for manual cleaning. You collect dust with your tool, bring that load to the building, and let its conveyor connection handle the journey onward. Its storage tank and output make it useful away from the base, where carrying each load back would interrupt your cleaning.
A complete basic route has four stages: collect dust, unload it into the Packager, transport the capsules, then deliver them to the base. Placing the building completes only one stage. An empty Packager beside a dirty sector will not begin sweeping that sector, and an output belt with no receiving destination does not complete the delivery.
The basic input and output are described in the Steam player discussions below and agree with both independent setup guides checked for this article. Payment on arrival is documented in the developer's 1.0.3 notes. This guide was updated against the 1.0.5 announcement on October 29; its new catcher-routing rule and capsule-packing fix are covered below.
FROM YOUR TOOL TO THE BASE
The Packager’s place in the line
Follow the dust. Packaging and selling happen at different points.
- 01
Collect dust
Your collection tool holds the material.
- 02
Unload at Packager
Transfer the load into the building.
- 03
Conveyor output
Route material toward its destination.
- 04
Base delivery
Dust and stone delivered to the base are sold on arrival.
JOONAS has a separate route: in 1.0.5 it chooses the emptiest catcher in the nearest group, moving to the next group when every catcher there is over 80% full. The Auto-Packer upgrade makes loose capsules at your feet when the tool fills.
| Part of the route | What it needs to accomplish |
|---|---|
| Your cleaning tool | Collect dust before you try to unload. |
| Packager | Accept the collected material and create transportable capsules. |
| Output conveyor | Carry those capsules to a connected receiving point. |
| Base or processing machine | Receive the delivery for payment or further processing. |
02Set up and test one short delivery route
The Packager is listed under Logistics in the Building Tool. Start with a route you can easily watch from end to end. Once that route works, extend it toward the area you are cleaning. This keeps your first test about the Packager and its connections instead of several machines at once.
Choose the destination first
For a straightforward first test, use the base's receiving intake. Identify that endpoint before placing a Packager or building a long belt. A processing route can be added after you have observed a successful delivery.
Place the Packager where you can unload
Open the Building Tool's Logistics category and select the Packager. Leave access for your character and room for the output conveyor. Check the current build prompt for its purchase and placement requirements.
Join the output to the receiving point
Connect a conveyor from the Packager's output toward the base intake. Inspect both ends of the route; a belt that looks close to the intake is not yet evidence that material can enter it.
Collect and unload a small load
Gather dust with your cleaning tool, return to the Packager, and use its interaction prompt to transfer the load. Watch the tool and machine readings to confirm that material was accepted. An empty tool is not a useful input test.
Watch the delivery finish
Follow a capsule from the Packager onto the belt and into the base. Check the payment as it arrives. If the capsule stops, keep the rest of the route intact and inspect the first place where movement fails.
03Choose between selling now and processing first
A belt into the base is a selling route. The developer states that dust and stone arriving by belt are paid as they come in. You should not expect the delivered dust to wait on the floor or reappear in the indoor selling machine for another sale. This exact expectation caused the question in the Steam 'Packaging question?' thread.
A belt into a Pressure Chamber is a processing route. The Packager prepares capsules for transport; the Pressure Chamber is the separate machine that converts Moon Dust into Moon Sand. If your plan is to process the dust, route it through the processing equipment before sending the output to the base.
Packaging is not the same as increasing the material's value. Adding another Packager does not replace a processor. Before expanding a processing line, check that its input is arriving, that the machine can operate, and that its output has somewhere to go.
| Your immediate goal | Route to build | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Sell the dust you have collected | Packager → conveyor → base intake | The delivery reaches the intake and payment occurs. |
| Feed a processing machine | Packager → conveyor → processor | The processor receives input and can send its output onward. |
| Find a stalled delivery | Inspect one existing route from its source | The first stage where material stops changing or moving. |
04Packager, Auto-Packer, JOONAS: which one do you need?
Several systems create or handle capsules, but they solve different parts of the job. Choose based on the work you want to remove: unloading trips, manual packaging, cleaning, or material processing.
The Auto-Packer description quoted in its Steam discussion says the tool creates a capsule at your feet when a container fills while cleaning. That can let you continue collecting, but it does not complete the delivery to your base. Plan how you will move those capsules before assuming the upgrade will solve a transport problem.
| System | Its job | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Packager building | Unload collected dust into a fixed station with conveyor output. | The cleaning tool or a complete delivery route. |
| Manual capsule packaging | Turn a tool load into a loose capsule you can move. | A conveyor network or a receiving destination. |
| Auto-Packer upgrade | Create a capsule at your feet when the tool container fills. | A Packager building or automatic delivery to the base. |
| JOONAS + Capsule Catcher | In 1.0.5, JOONAS cleans and launches each capsule to the emptiest catcher in the nearest group; it switches groups when every catcher there is over 80% full. | The catcher's outgoing delivery route. |
| Pressure Chamber | Process Moon Dust into Moon Sand. | The Packager's role as an unloading point for your tool. |
05When a Packager is worth adding
Use one when manual cleaning repeatedly fills your tool far from a selling point, especially if an existing belt passes near the work area. A nearby unloading point can shorten the trip you repeat for every load. Leave an accessible approach for yourself and a clear connection from the output to the belt.
If you are already unloading beside the base, a new Packager may remove very little walking. Likewise, if JOONAS already delivers to a working catcher route, first identify the missing stage before buying another type of building. The useful purchase is the one that addresses the delay you can actually observe.
This is a layout decision, not a universal purchase order. Test one successful load and compare the route you walk before extending belts across a large area. No payback time is estimated here because it depends on your distance, cleaning speed, build costs and existing infrastructure.
Need to adjust a working route? Version 1.0.5 adds Move Mode: press R with the building tool to move a piece together with everything standing on it, then place it again for free. Belts at its ports follow where they can reach. Check both ends and watch another delivery after moving; the patch does not promise that every belt will still reach.
06Packager not working? Identify the failed stage
Version 1.0.5 explicitly fixes capsules not packing in big bases with many capsules on belts, covering Q, the Auto-Packer and machines. Confirm your installed version before applying older troubleshooting advice. The announcement is an official fix statement, not a promise that every stopped line has the same cause.
Our error guide separates that 1.0.5 change from historical reports after 1.0.4. If the problem continues in your current version, distinguish failure to create a capsule from a capsule that forms and then stops on its route. Keep the version and machine details when reporting it.
| What you observe | What to check next | What that check tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The Packager has received no dust | Collect a load and use the building's interaction prompt; compare the readings before and after. | Whether unloading occurred at all. |
| A capsule appears but stays at the output | Inspect the first belt connection and its direction of travel. | The packaging stage worked; investigate transport next. |
| Capsules stop at the end of a belt | Inspect the receiving intake and the machine it belongs to. | A finished-looking belt may still lack a working endpoint. |
| Dust reaches the base but is absent from the indoor machine | Check whether payment occurred on arrival. | Paid-on-arrival material is not waiting for a second manual sale. |
| The route stops at a Pressure Chamber or another processor | Read that machine's material, power and output displays together. | The downstream machine may be the stalled stage. |
| The screen explicitly says 'Could not pack a capsule' | Record the machine name and game version, then use the dedicated error guide linked below. | Version 1.0.5 addresses packing failures in big bases with many capsules on belts; the message alone does not prove you need a Packager building. |
