MapleStory Classic World Magician 1–30: Magic Claw, MP costs and training maps

Choose Energy Bolt or Magic Claw, understand Guard and recovery, plan equipment LUK, and compare concrete training-map checkpoints before second job.

01Start in Ellinia, then choose an attack plan

Finish your Maple Island introduction and visit Grendel the Really Old in Ellinia at level 10. Nexon confirms that this is the Magician advancement contact; return at level 30 to choose Fire/Poison Wizard, Ice/Lightning Wizard or Cleric.

The skill and equipment decisions below summarize Nia Meow’s October 27 community guide, including Grummash’s corrections. They are a current Classic World route, not an official build or a claim of testing by this site. Choose the attack plan before spreading points between both spells: second-job SP cannot repair a first-job allocation according to that guide.

02Energy Bolt or Magic Claw: compare the shot you can actually land

Magic Claw is the more forgiving choice on uneven ground because its hits pass through walls and platforms. Energy Bolt needs a clear shot; a blocked cast still spends MP. On a flat route, the cheaper spell can be useful. The important comparison is cost per successful kill, including blocked shots and misses.

At maximum rank, the cited guide gives both attacks the same total Basic Attack, split into one line for Bolt and two for Claw. Two lines do not mean twice the total power. Claw also needs one point in Energy Bolt before you can invest in it.

03A Magic Claw route, organized by what each investment solves

For a terrain-friendly start, the community route opens Energy Bolt at level 10, then puts two points into Magic Claw and one into Improved MP Recovery at level 11. It finishes Magic Claw at 17. This is one coherent route; do not mix its remaining-point totals with the separate Energy Bolt plan.

After the attack, recovery improves the value of MP items. Magic Guard is introduced for dangerous encounters, then Magic Armor reduces incoming damage. Max MP Increase comes later: in the cited Classic rules it scales the current base pool rather than permanently rewarding early allocation.

Checkpoint in the cited routeWhat it addsWhy you check it
Level 17Magic Claw 20A finished main attack before dividing attention.
Level 22Improved MP Recovery 15The route reaches its full MP-item bonus.
Level 23Magic Guard 3, Magic Armor 1The Guard prerequisite opens Armor.
Level 30Magic Armor 20, Max MP Increase 2The Claw route finishes its first-job budget.

04Keep defense and MP recovery separate

Magic Guard transfers part of an incoming hit from HP to MP. It buys a larger survival margin, but the same MP pool also powers your attacks. Turn it into a deliberate encounter choice: inspect the damage you take and your available potions before a boss or unfamiliar target, rather than assuming a low-cost grinding setup is safe everywhere.

Magic Armor reduces damage before that transfer. Improved MP Recovery has another job: its first point enables natural recovery, while later points improve recovery from items. The source lists natural recovery as 1% of maximum MP every ten seconds at every skill rank; extra ranks do not repeatedly multiply that natural rate.

Keep emergency HP recovery even when focusing on MP efficiency. A cheaper refill strategy loses its purpose if you let either bar become unsafe. Check your actual recovery amounts after skill bonuses and avoid wasting a large potion on a nearly full bar.

05Buy for Magic Attack, and add LUK for a specific item

The community AP route prioritizes INT and adds LUK when the next usable wand requires it. Total LUK includes equipment bonuses. Check what you can equip now, not bonuses from an item that itself requires the missing LUK.

The source’s weapon sequence includes Metal Wand at 20, Ice Wand at 25 and Mithril Wand at 30. Their total LUK requirements are 10, 15 and 20 respectively. These are equipment checkpoints, not a demand to copy someone else’s base stats.

Both wands and staves can use a shield in the cited rules. Check that slot before spending heavily on a small robe improvement. Buy Magic Attack upgrades for spell damage; a weapon’s physical attack value or a Weapon Attack glove scroll does not improve these spells.

06Training checkpoints from level 15 to 30

Use these named maps as candidates from the cited Magic Claw route, then test your own damage and hit rate. They were selected for sample gear, not measured on your character. We have omitted its projected EXP rates because travel, crowded channels and your equipment change the result.

Character checkpointCandidate mapsBefore moving

07Your level-30 handoff

Compare two sessions of the same length before changing your regular map. Record EXP gained, potions used and time away from combat. A monster with more EXP per kill can still be worse when it needs an extra cast or forces frequent refills.
