01Advance through Dark Lord and keep Lucky Seven ready
Nexon's launch notes put Thief at level 10 and its Assassin or Bandit choice at level 30, both through Dark Lord in Kerning City. Complete the advancement quest before assigning second-job points.
The details here draw on Nia Meow's October 27 Assassin guide and its attributed Grummash example. These are community build decisions, not an official best build or our own gameplay test. The walkthrough starts The Thief's Next Journey, delivers Dark Lord's letter to the Thief Job Instructor at Construction Site North of Kerning City, collects 30 Dark Marbles, then returns The Proof of a Hero to Dark Lord.
The source assumes your first-job Lucky Seven, Keen Eyes and Nimble Body are developed. Second-job points cannot be placed in the first-job book in this version. Check that foundation rather than assuming new Assassin points can finish an abandoned Thief skill.

Nexon · Official launch notes02Early SP: movement, then a dependable claw foundation
The opening adds mobility immediately, then reaches Booster without delaying the core attack setup. Lucky Seven continues doing the damage while the new skills improve movement, weapon output and upkeep.
More Booster points improve duration and its HP/MP cost rather than adding more attack-speed stages. Earlier longer-duration Booster is an upkeep choice; it delays something else in the skill plan. Check prerequisites and your current skill book before spending.
| Checkpoint | Community opening | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Level 30 | Haste 1 | Improve movement between targets and platforms immediately. |
| Level 31 | Add 3 Claw Mastery | Begin the weapon path that provides Attack Power and star retrieval in Classic World. |
| Level 32 | Reach Claw Mastery 5; add Claw Booster 1 | Unlock Booster and gain its two-stage attack-speed effect. |
| After the opening | The source finishes Mastery before Critical Throw | Attack Power improves the weaker damage rolls used to judge reliable kills; critical frequency alone does not guarantee a kill. |
03AP and claws: total DEX, then actual availability
The community AP route meets the next claw's total DEX requirement and places the remainder in LUK. Total DEX is base DEX plus equipment bonuses. If you copy an equipment-dependent allocation without the same shoes or other bonuses, you may fail the next claw's requirement.
Adamantium Guards at level 30 and Dark Guardian at level 35 are early checkpoints in the source. It lists Weaponcrafting 6 and 7 recipes respectively. Check the recipe, your access and the finished item's requirements before using them as a purchase plan.
Be careful with attractive later examples. The same guide shows Dark Slain and Dark Avenger in sample calculations while explicitly saying their acquisition sources are unconfirmed. Do not build an essential stat requirement around an item you cannot obtain. Compare available alternatives, then recalculate total DEX and expected kills. A database entry is not proof that a shop currently sells it.
04Buy a star supply, not just one impressive stack
Claw Weapon Attack and throwing-star Weapon Attack add together in the cited equipment model. A stronger star can improve damage, but its initial purchase price competes with your claw, armor and potion budget. One expensive stack does not support a long session when it runs empty.
The source lists Subi at 15 Weapon Attack and Wolbi at 17, both with 500-star stacks. Subi is sold in the listed towns; Wolbi is available from Max in Kerning City's Civic Center after Helpful Stranger citizenship. Treat that grade as a requirement, not a reward granted merely by becoming an Assassin.
Claw Mastery retrieves some thrown stars, reaching 25% in the source's max-rank description. Retrieval reduces consumption; it does not create unlimited ammunition. Recharge several usable stacks, keep space for drops, and include the return journey when comparing a distant training map with a nearby one.
Stock before leaving town
Check star stacks, recharge them, and reserve mesos for HP and MP recovery.
Observe one short session
Record how quickly stars and MP fall while using your normal buffs and Lucky Seven.
Budget the complete upgrade
Buy more expensive stars only after comparing the damage gain with the number of usable stacks and supplies you can retain.
05Use Haste and recovery skills for their current roles
Maintain shooting distance. If a monster reaches you, the claw can punch instead of delivering the expected ranged attack. Haste helps movement, but it does not remove the need to choose a safe firing position.
| Skill | Current community reference | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| Haste | Rank 1 gives +10 Speed and +1 Jump for 100 seconds; maximum rank gives nearby party members +30 Speed and +10 Jump for 300 seconds. | Plan movement and buff refreshes around your actual rank. Older MapleStory Haste values do not describe this version. |
| Critical Recovery | Recovery depends on critical hits and has a 30-second lockout. | It helps sustain a session but does not replace emergency potions or heal on every critical. |
| Drain | The source treats it as situational HP recovery; its absorption is chance-based. | Keep Lucky Seven as the ordinary attack. Do not rely on an uncertain heal when a potion is needed immediately. |
06Choose maps by reliable kills and refill travel
A miss still consumes an attack's time and supplies. Check target level and hit rate before chasing a larger EXP number. The guide's map projections assume specific gear and clean damage thresholds, so they are starting candidates rather than measured results for your character.
| Stage | Source candidates | What to verify yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Early Assassin | Transfer Area; Dangerous Steam | Lucky Seven's reach and kill count on Stirges; the danger from other monsters on the map. |
| Developing second job | Ant Tunnel II; Ant Tunnel Park; Deep Ant Tunnel II | Casts required for each common monster, not only the weakest mushroom. |
| Later second job | Monkey Forest II; Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest II | Your actual claw, stars and accuracy, plus platform spacing and the supply journey. |
